Best Tuna Salad Ever

Yes, this is the BEST Tuna Salad ever because it is the one my mama made!

I never liked the smell of fish as a child.

Tuna Salad

If you wanted me out of the kitchen, open a can of tuna or salmon and proceed to make a meal!! Could not stand it!

It’s a good thing our mothers are so wise.  I don’t know about you, but my mom could doctor just about anything I thought I did not like, get me to try it and ta da, I became a fan.

Her tuna salad is one of her dishes that I tried to turn my nose up to; but being the clever person she is, she added ingredients she knew I liked.

I mean, Granny Smith apple in tuna salad? How could that possibly taste good?  But it did.
As well as the shredded carrot. The tartness of the apple and the natural sweetness of the carrot blended so well with the tuna.
Then you add in some extra texture with the crunchy celery, the pungent sweet onion and softness of the egg, well, I was consuming a delight to my senses!! And did I mention that I thought it was pretty too?

Since we eat kosher, I always use the Albacore white tuna.

Tuna Salad

My family follows the statistics of most Americans: we eat tuna mostly at lunch and in the summertime.
According to healthytuna.com:

  • Americans eat more tuna in the summertime – nearly 30 percent of tuna eating occasions are during the summer. Consumption is lowest in October, November and December.
  • Households with children under 18 are about twice as likely to have tuna sandwiches available than households without children.
  • Of those Americans who eat canned tuna, the vast majority, 83 percent, eat it for lunch. In fact, canned tuna is the only regularly consumed seafood at lunch.

Tuna Facts

When it comes to healthy eating, canned tuna has it all.
It is rich in protein, low in fat and calories and is an excellent source of the essential omega-3 fatty acids which help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Did you know

  • Unopened canned tuna has a recommended shelf-life of up to four years, provided that the product has been stored under normal conditions and is not damaged. Pouched tuna has a shelf-life of three years.
Who knew, I mean who would eat 4 year old canned tuna, but there might come a day…
