My brother had a favorite dessert when we were growing up that had a sweetened pretzel crust. Now I did not think that dessert was all that great, but I thought I should try to prepare a gluten free version, to share with our mom so she could make it for us!! Sounds like a great idea huh? Memories of childhood for two adults with kids of our own. Hey, we could make some new memories for us and our kids.
Anyway, I needed to find a recipe to make my own gluten free pretzels or see what I could find on the grocery shelf. I am not proud, I went with the grocery shelf.
I discovered Snyder’s of Hanover makes gluten free pretzels in several flavors. Soooo, since I wanted to give a fair evaluation, I bought one of each flavor that my store had in stock.
I am here to tell you, I was not disappointed.
I purchased the Plain, Honey Mustard and Onion and Hot Buffalo Wing flavors. They were all fantastic!!
The honey mustard has a subtle, sweet taste that will have you emptying the entire bag by yourself!
The Hot Buffalo Wing has just enough heat to make me happy, but not enough that my dad (who thinks everything with spice is too hot!) could not eat and enjoy (well, maybe enjoy is too strong a word).
The calorie count for Plain was 110 calories with 260 mgm of Sodium and 1 gm of sugar. Honey Mustard Onion had 130 calories, 340 mgm of Sodium and 1 g of sugar while the Hot Buffalo Wing has 120 calories, 360 mgm of Sodium and 0 g of sugar.
I highly recommend these pretzels to anyone who loved pretzels before they became gluten free and have been feeling deprived.
They are all very delicious tasting and very addictive.
P.S. They worked really well in the dessert, too.
