Quick and easy meal. Delicious creamed beef on toast with a military history.
My maternal grandfather was a career Marine, yeah it makes you want to stand at attention and salute, doesn’t it?
He was strict, but fair. He was very proud of being a Marine and at the end of his career he was in Vietnam for a year. So yes, I am proud he was my grandfather.
He loved to cook and passed on several recipes to me.
One of my favorites is SOS, and no, were not allowed to use the military slang for it; it was just always SOS. I always loved when we had this creamy beef growing up. It has such a rich texture and when you serve it on some buttered toast, it is soooo good!
My mom says when she was growing up, he would fry an egg and have some spring onions to go with it.
Personally, I like its creamy goodness on some gluten free toast, no frills required.
I love that this is such a fast meal, no chopping required, just brown the meat, add in the four and milk and dinner is served!
Hope you enjoy.
- 1.25 pounds of ground beef*
- ¾ cup gluten free flour
- 2 cups of milk**
- salt and pepper to taste
- In a non stick skillet, brown ground beef.
- Drain any fat or water.
- Add flour to coat meat.
- Gradually add in milk, stirring to blend and thicken.***
- Add salt and pepper to taste.
**I use almond milk
*** Adding more milk will make dish more soupy or thin and I like the meat mixture to be thick.
I’m intrigued by this recipe, it’s definitely something I want to try asap. What do you think about using almond meal instead of GF flour?
I have not tried it with almond meal but I am sure you could use it in place of the GF flour. The flour is used as a thickener in this recipe.
